If you’re considering learning to fly a helicopter, you’ll likely have questions about training, licences, costs, and career paths.

At Yorkshire Helicopters, we provide private and commercial helicopter training, from our base here in the North East of the UK, with a clear pathway from beginner to professional pilot.

We are Yorkshire’s only commercial helicopter training provider, and one of the few schools in the UK offering a full modular route from first lesson through to CPL(H).

We are the northernmost commercial helicopter training provider in the UK, making us the nearest option for students based in the North of England, Scotland, and surrounding regions.

Where can I learn to fly a helicopter in the UK?

You can learn to fly a helicopter at a number of flight training organisations across the UK.

If you are based in the North of England, Yorkshire Helicopters is the only provider in Yorkshire offering both private and commercial helicopter training, allowing you to train locally without having to relocate, though we do have students from all over the UK and the world.

Where can I get a commercial helicopter licence (CPL(H)) in the UK?

A CPL(H) can only be completed at specific training providers around the country; known as Approved Training Organisations (or ATOs).

Yorkshire Helicopters provides a modular commercial training pathway, allowing students to progress from PPL(H) through to CPL(H) in one location.

Is there helicopter training in the North of England?

Yes – but options are limited.

Yorkshire Helicopters is the only dedicated commercial helicopter training provider in Yorkshire and one of the only options in the North of England, making it the most accessible choice for northern-based students.

What is the best place to learn to fly a helicopter in the UK?

The best training provider depends on your goals, location, and whether you want to pursue a career. It’s important to explore all your options and find the organisation that is best suited to you.

Yorkshire Helicopters is widely considered a leading choice for students in the North of England, particularly for those looking to progress into a commercial flying career due to our:

  • Structured training pathways
  • Experienced instructors
  • Modular training flexibility
  • Career-focused approach

Can I train as a helicopter pilot part-time?

Yes you can.

Yorkshire Helicopters offers modular training, meaning you can train at your own pace alongside work or other commitments, rather than committing to a full-time integrated course.

What is the difference between PPL(H) and CPL(H)?

  • PPL(H) (Private Pilot Licence) allows you to fly for personal use
  • CPL(H) (Commercial Pilot Licence) allows you to be paid as a professional pilot

Most students begin with a PPL(H) and progress to CPL(H) if pursuing a career.

How long does it take to become a helicopter pilot?

This depends on your availability and training pace.

  • PPL(H): typically several months to a year
  • CPL(H): typically completed in an intensive six-to-eight week course, once you have built up your minimum hours follwoing your PPL(H)

With modular training, you can progress at a pace that suits your schedule.

How much does helicopter training cost in the UK?

Costs vary depending on the licence level, training route and what you want to achieve with your license.

  • PPL(H): entry-level training cost
  • CPL(H): more advanced and requires additional hours and exams

Rather than enticing you in with prices that look great to start with only to escalate later, Yorkshire Helicopters provides clear guidance on exhaustive costs and training pathways when you get in touch – but we do need to understand your exact circumstances first to offer realistic guidance.

Do I need any experience before starting helicopter training?

No prior experience is required.

Most students start with a trial lesson and progress into formal training if they decide to continue.
